Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program
The Artist's Den @ The Mayflower Arts Center

A for-profit arts center founded in 2012, the Mayflower Arts Center has quickly become a vibrant member of the creative community in downtown Troy, Ohio. The Mayflower Arts Center provides a community-friendly environment to create art, and enlighten and inspire a deeper appreciation of art among artists and patrons. Located prominently on the historic downtown square of Troy, Ohio—in the 1928 Mayflower Theater building—the new Mayflower Arts Center offers gallery and exhibit spaces, classes and workshops, indie/art films, fine art retail, art lectures, performances and concerts.

In the Spring of 2015, the Mayflower Arts Center initiated an Artist-in-Residence program, allowing local and non-local artists the opportunity to spend time creating and honing their artistic discipline. The Artist's Den, an expansive one-bedroom apartment and studio located on the Art Center's second floor, features 1,200sf of living space with hardwood floors, natural light, master bedroom with walk-in closet, one and half bathrooms, fully functional kitchen, gas fireplace, pantry, washer and dryer, and private entrance. Non-local artists may live and work in the Artist Den. Local artists may apply to use the space strictly as a studio space.

While in residence, the artists are free to work in the Artist's Den studio and may open their doors for open studio hours with retail space to sell their works. AIR participants may also develop and run classes and workshops to be taught during their residence period to help offset the cost of the residency. Additional opportunities exist for artists to assist with events and exhibits in the Mayflower Arts Center, including assisting with performance events, curating exhibits, and developing community programs, as well as classes and workshops for children and adults.

Pending exhibition scheduling and portfolio review, AIR participants may also be offered an exhibition in our Lobby Gallery during their residency as well as the opportunity to present an artist talk to the community.

Program Information:
Cost
Rent is $850 per month, or $550 for two weeks, inclusive of utilities. A minimum of two weeks is required; however the length of stay is negotiable. Transportation, materials, food and additional expenses are the responsibility of the artist. For those who plan ahead and want to self-fund their residency we recommend  http://www.hatchfund.org or http://www.indiegogo.com.

Selection
Candidates are reviewed and recommended by arts professionals in your discipline. The committee looks for candidates whose work is likely to benefit from having time to focus. There are no educational requirements. Emerging and established artists are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older. Expect a response to the application from The Mayflower Arts Center within 30 days from posted deadline.

Program Benefits
The residency affords the artist time and space for focused, independent studio work, the development of new ideas and experimentation. Visits to local galleries and studios, as well as short trips to regional arts facilities can open a range of networking possibilities. The Mayflower Arts Center is located downtown Troy on the historic square, which features a multitude of unique shops and restaurants—all within walking distance. More information about Troy and Miami County may be found at HomeGrownGreat.com.

The Mayflower Arts Center features the Lobby Gallery, a pedestrian level front wall gallery space available for featured artists to exhibit work. The residence will have the opportunity to display their work in a solo exhibit at some time during the residence. Artists may also conduct camps, classes, and workshops at the studio.

The resident artist will also be given the opportunity to present a one-hour public program during their residency as a part of The Mayflower Arts Center’s free guest lecture/speaker series, which typically has 30-75 attendees. The program may be tailored to the resident’s medium, interest, and experience. It must be related to the interpretive themes of The Mayflower Arts Center, its local environs and the natural and cultural resources of the area, and supports the mission and values of The Mayflower Arts Center. Programs can be demonstrations, talks, exploratory walks, or performances. Artists must provide their own supplies for these presentations.

We welcome self-motivated, focused artists working in a range of traditional and non-traditional visual arts practices, as well as writers, composers, and film makers. Residents are encouraged to have a clear objective for the time of their residency. The duration of the residency is typically two weeks to three months, but the length of stay is negotiable.

Resident artist will also have the opportunity to assist the Director with program development, including:
  • planning, curating, and displaying exhibit work for featured and student artists;
  • developing and leading day, evening, or weekend classes and workshops in your discipline for kids and/or adults.

Collaborative artists and couples are welcome to apply; however, be mindful of limited bed and living quarters. Individual CV or resumes will need to be submitted for each artist. For questions or more information, please contact The Mayflower Arts Center Director at 937-552-5848 or by email.
